Philosophical Investigations G-BOOKS WIKIPEDIA
Notes by Karl Tyson
There is no doubt this work is central to the evolution of 20th century thought. Wittgenstein is, I believe, the most important philosopher that Dreyfus does not teach. I suspect the reason is deep. Wittgenstein is counted neither as existentialist nor phenomenologist, although I believe he qualifies as both. But he is claimed by the analytical wing, on the basis of his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and the fact his defection from rationalism can be finessed by interpretation into a defense of it. Anglo-American analytical philosophy generally mistrusts the continental wing (a mistrust Dreyfus has attempted to overcome). I think Dreyfus decided to leave Wittgenstein to his analytical colleagues, and not fight that battle.
I also looked at the commentary Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations by William Brenner. I've heard that PI gets interpreted all over the board, and this seemed the case here. I was amazed at how little Brenner seemed to want to tie LW's ideas into other relevant philosophy and even back to the T-LP.
